Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled within the app.

Information We Collect

The app may collect information that you voluntarily provide while using its features. This information is used solely to enable core app functionality and improve your in-app experience.

How Information Is Used

Information collected is used for its intended purpose, such as:

• Providing app features and functionality
• Saving user progress or preferences
• Syncing data across devices (if applicable)
• Measuring the effectiveness of our advertising (see "Advertising Measurement" below)

Location Data

Users are not required to enable location services to use the app.

If opted in, location data is only collected at the moment of capture. When you choose a photo from your library, the location saved in that photo (if any) is used instead, and you can edit or remove it before submitting.

What it's used for:

• Location data is used by our third-party image identification service to enhance the identification model performance. Many species look nearly identical so providing a location improves the likelihood of a correct identification. Users can disable location permissions for the app and still participate but the identification model performance may suffer.
• Location data allows users to see the precise locations of their captures in the "Discovery Map". Only the user themselves can see the precise locations of their captures.
• If opted in, location data allows users to see the approximate location of other users captures of the same species in the "Bestiary" (or "Guide") maps. On this public view, the map pins are shifted by up to about 1 km in a random direction, so the actual capture location is not shown. Captures made inside a zoo, aviary or similar public facility are the exception: these are shown at the facility. Furthermore, the pins on the 'Bestiary' maps cannot be tied to individual profiles. Users can choose to opt out of having their pins visible in these views entirely by switching to 'Hidden' in 'Profile Management' screen.
• If you have already granted location permission, the app may use your approximate location to suggest public groups in your city. This is used on your device to look up your city name and is not saved.

Identity

• Email addresses are never visible to other users, only your chosen Display Name, which can be anything you choose and changed at any time.

No Selling of Data

We do not:

• Sell user data
• Rent user data
• Trade user data
• Use your photos, captures, location, email address or display name for advertising

The only information shared for advertising purposes is described under "Advertising Measurement" below.

Advertising Measurement

We advertise our apps on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Google. To understand which ads lead people to install and use the app, the app uses the Meta SDK and Google Analytics for Firebase, which receive:

• Your device's advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, Advertising ID on Android)
• App events such as installing and opening the app, creating an account, creating a profile and making your first capture

We do not send these services your name, email address, account ID, photos, locations or purchases.

• On iOS, your advertising identifier is only shared if you choose "Allow" when the app asks permission to track. You can change this at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
• On Android, you can reset or delete your Advertising ID at any time in your device's settings (Settings > Privacy > Ads, or Settings > Google > Ads, depending on your device).

Third Parties

Apart from the advertising measurement described above, the app does not share personal data with third parties, except where required to operate essential app services. These include:

• Google Firebase, for accounts, data storage and notifications
• Apple, Google and RevenueCat, to process subscriptions and in-app purchases

These services are used strictly to support app functionality and do not have permission to use your data for their own purposes.

Children

Our apps are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Data Security

Reasonable measures are taken to protect user information and prevent unauthorized access.

Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Any changes will be reflected within the app or on the app's listing page.
